Hallo, Wiesbaden!

27 Apr

**Welcome! If you’re new to the blog, thanks so much for stopping by! Please use the button on the right to sign up to follow the blog. And don’t worry, I don’t abuse having your email address- you’ll only get an email for new posts, which are usually only a few times a week when we’re in full swing! Things are pretty straight forward- feel free to look back through the Archives, back to when I started the blog several years ago. Check out the ‘About Us’ to get a little background and the ‘Maps’ tab that may help with some of the visuals if you’re anything like me!

What a special post this is! So much to talk about! For starters, I’m back to the blog after a little hiatus…Oh who am I kidding, after a huge nearly three year hiatus! I know I said it before, but having a kid will do that to ya! I seriously don’t know where all the time goes, but it sure doesn’t lend itself to sitting down at the computer for any length of time, let alone focusing on writing, organizing…Ha! I guess I can’t blame it all on this ‘new’ family dynamic…Since my last post, I’ve grown and then sold Lowcountry Pet Sitters (that’s another post all in itself, but after 10 years in business, it was time), we’ve sold a house, built a house, traveled a good bit (maybe I can do some flashback posts?)…Needless to say, I’m back for real this time and can’t wait to share this latest adventure with all of you! And we even have a new name! Thomas Wanderings…

Which brings me to our latest news- we’re in Wiesbaden, Germany, for the next couple months on a little ‘trial run’ to see if it’s something we’d like to bite off for a longer three year stint. It’s actually kinda funny the way this whole thing came about…Early last fall, John was hired- twice- for three year jobs over here. The first was going to be here in Wiesbaden, but then funding fell through. The second was in Stuttgart, where we lived before- we even had a start date for just after Christmas- but then there was a hiring freeze for that particular contractor. Jeez. If you’ve ever worked with the government, then you can understand- and commiserate- with how all too common stuff like this is. Beyond frustrating, but not a darn thing you can do about it except sit back and wait.

Well, then the first job presented itself again. The position has sat vacant since November- yes, it takes that long to get funding issues worked out!- and the group over here has needed somebody since yesterday! Since it looks like funding is within weeks of finalizing, John was offered this TDY (regular travel as opposed to relocation) as a win-win for everyone- someone to take over some of the workload from the guys here who’ve been working short staffed and a chance for us to see what we think!

Now y’all know me…I’m crunchy like this. I firmly believe that everything happens for a reason and in this case, I 100% believe that the Universe was hard at work making this opportunity possible for us. It’s no coincidence that the other jobs fell through. It’s not just luck that Neve was (almost) able to finish her school year with the teachers and classmates she loves. It’s not by chance that we’ve said countless times over the last six months, ‘Oh, we’re so glad that we were home for this! What if we’d already been gone?’ Nope, all of it was part of a grander plan that we no control over. All of it was biding time until this mini-adventure presented itself. And I’ll be honest, I’m the one who needed this ‘mini’ more than anyone else. John has always known that he could move wherever, live wherever, be happy wherever. As long as we’re together, he’s good. Neve is a chameleon and adapts to change in the blink of an eye (we’re so blessed in that regard!)- home for her is wherever Mommy and Daddy are. Disclaimer: that’s not to say that she doesn’t TERRIBLY miss people when we’re gone, but between technology, imagination and visits, we’ve been able to work it out. But then there’s me. Change has always been tough for me. I can travel, I can go and do, I can immerse myself in anything…temporarily. But beyond that- like for three years- that’s commitment…And scary. This opportunity gives me that chance I need to imagine myself living here for a long time, raising my child here for a long time, being without many of the people I love the most for a long time, being just ‘The Three Amigos’ for a long time…all before signing on the dotted line. We shall see!

So here we are. We have a ground level two bedroom, one bathroom apartment just a few blocks from city center/Old Town of Wiesbaden. As always, AirBnB/VRBO didn’t disappoint! It’s lovely with a huge open space for the living room/dining room/kitchen and a wall of glass sliding doors opening onto a covered terrace and small fenced in yard. Suits us perfectly for these upcoming weeks, especially since we can walk or bike to everything!

And I think that’s enough for today…Blogging will be a bit different this go around as I’ll be timing around my partner in crime, Miss Thang. Today is Day 3- John’s first day at work, our first day up before noon and the first day since we arrived that it’s yet to stop raining. But that’s not so bad- it just means a lazy, PJ day for the two of us. Those are always some of our favs. 🙂
